Frame numbering
 According to "Villiers Singles & Twins" by Roy Bacon frame numbers were prefixed (1949) D. (1950 / 51 / 52) M.  (1953) A. 

Model announcement
"The Motor Cycle" 21 October 1948 (New James Lightweights, page 314) announced the Model 6E Deluxe. 

"Motor Cycling" same date introduced the 197cc Deluxe. 

The name "Captain" was not used until 1950.  The 1949 parts book refers to the Model 6E.

Road tests
"Motor Cycling" 12 January 1950 (Road Tests of Current Models).

"The Motor Cycle" 27 April 1950 (A Day Out in Westmoreland, page 406) has a story of a journey by James Captain.
