In an attempt, perhaps, to convince
the public of the reliability of the Cavalier, Northampton James dealer
André Baldet conducted a "1000 miles in 24 hours" stunt in the Isle of Man.
Baldet was well known for long distance endurance feats. James works engineer Norman Moore (one of the famous "three Normans" who rode in trials in the immediate post-war period) went to oversee the attempt. Baldet rode just over 26 laps of the T.T. course. He started on the Sulby straight at 8pm on Saturday August 16th 1958. Each alternate lap he refuelled. All pit-stops were included in the overall calculations. He averaged 41.9 mph and 71 mpg |
